The elements in this image are not random! They deliberately tell the story of a man who is heralding to prospective clients that he is ready, willing and able to work and to succeed. Rothstein’s photographs are a striking depiction of people in relation to their environment. In his interview for the Archive of American Art in 1964, the photographer explained “…the Photo Unit was run more like a university seminar than like a government agency. Director of the Photo Unit, Roy Stryker, who previously, taught at Columbia University made me aware that there was a great deal of significance in small details.”
